This alluring venue, located at the epicenter of North Beach, became an instant landmark when it opened in 1998. The goal was to create something classic for Broadway, a place that represented the history of dining in San Francisco. A turn-of-the-century brick building was renovated to create the ground-floor restaurant and basement-level jazz club, which are infused with references, old and new.
Black Cat has the look and feel of a French brasserie, with red leather booths, a shellfish bar, towering wall mirrors and a large bar. The bustling crowd and views of the action on Broadway, invigorate the 110-seat dining room.
The Blue Bar is entirely a different place—a deluxe, downstairs lounge with a mid-century modernist design. A composition of rich colors, luxurious materials and classic furnishings provide comfort and intimacy. The 1,000 square foot space is like a nighttime living room.
